BIO: Brandon Leake made history as AGT’s first spoken word poet to win the series. This spoken word poet took the stage and quickly earned Howie Mandel’s Golden Buzzer. During the competition, Leake performed poems about his late sister, the Black Lives Matter movement, and his daughter.
Leake found himself scribbling words that would string together into moving poetry while growing up. After trying multiple sports, he realized his passion while working with Stockton Poet, Tama Brisbane on an All-America City piece. In 2012, Leake founded the ‘Called To Move’ student poetry group. This group turned into an organization that aims to help youth express themselves and bring significant change in society.
He joined the Sacramento slam poetry team in 2015 and began performing in 40 shows across the globe. He originally auditioned for America’s Got Talent in 2017, but was rejected for that season. Following the rejection, Leake got a teaching job at Able Charter Schools in Stockton. In 2018, he released the album, Deficiencies: A Tale from My Dark Side and returned to touring. Right before AGT, he worked at Brookside school daycare center alongside his wife.
Leake met his wife while touring the country performing his poems. After dating for almost a year, they got married on September 2, 2017. They welcomed their daughter, Aaliyah James, on February 29, 2020. Since winning AGT, he’s signed to United Talent Agency, released a book, an album, a film, and more.
