Contestant Leaves Simon Cowell SPEECHLESS … And Not In A Good Way [VIDEO]
We know Simon Cowell doesn’t hold back when it comes to criticizing bad singers, but one X Factor USA contestant actually left him speechless in 2013. The contestant seemed to think it was a good sign, but it definitely wasn’t.
Melanie Wright didn’t exactly impress the judges with her audition. The 48-year-old paralegal actually seemed to confuse them with her questionable cover of “Titanium” by David Guetta.
Melanie Wright Leaves Simon Cowell Speechless On ‘X Factor’
Before her audition, Melanie said she was “ready for a new chapter,” sharing that she wants to be “the equivalent of Carrie Underwood.” She said winning the show “would mean everything,” adding that it would be “a whole new start.”
Things started pretty well for Melanie. She bonded with judge Paulina Rubio over their shared love of gloves, and Simon Cowell told her she looks good for her age. The judges also seemed intrigued when she said she’s been preparing for “a moment like this” since she was three years old.
However, Melanie’s cover of “Titanium” had them cringing and even laughing. At one point, Simon covered his face as he chuckled. The audience cheered for her when the song was over, but that wasn’t a very good indication of what the judges thought.
What Did The Judges Say About Her Audition?
After the performance, Simon Cowell didn’t seem to know what to say. “Speechless, Simon?” Melanie asked excitedly, seeming to think he enjoyed the performance. In response, Simon didn’t say anything.
“Speak, Simon,” fellow judge Kelly Rowland prompted. He stayed silent for a little bit longer, simply smiling in shock. When he finally spoke up, he asked Melanie, “Why did you choose that song?”
Melanie replied that she liked it. Then Simon Cowell made a strange comparison, saying Melanie’s audition was “like finding out Cinderella works at the Playboy Mansion.” He said she’s “not what you seem.”
Needless to say, all the judges voted “no” to sending Melanie through. When she was gone, Simon tried his hand at singing like her.
