Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some of this season’s AGT auditions had to be filmed without a live audience. This was a challenge for everyone, but especially stand-up comedians who rely on crowd feedback.

Comedian Michael Yo, a former entertainment reporter, got emotional after his own audition in an almost-empty auditorium. Check out his act below, and read on to find out what the AGT judges thought.

Before his audition, Michael shared that he had interviewed all the AGT judges when he worked for E! News. However, with the support of his wife, he chose to chase his dream of becoming a comedian.

Michael delivered a funny stand-up routine about getting older. “You ever go to bed feeling fine, and then when you wake up it feels like somebody beat the crap out of you?” he asked. “Who is beating us up in our sleep?”

The judges, plus AGT host Terry Crews, laughed along with Michael’s set and even gave him a standing ovation at the end. Michael started tearing up as the judges shared their positive feedback for him. Howie called him “loveable” and “relatable.”

Michael really started getting emotional as Simon Cowell praised his performance, calling it a “fantastic audition.” Eric Stonestreet, meanwhile, said, “You did exactly what you would do if you were playing for 3,000 people, and you nailed it, bro.”

As Michael wiped away tears, Sofia told him, “I would go hug you, but there’s like a virus going on.” So Simon suggested they “send” him hugs, and Howie said they should hug him with votes. All three AGT judges voted yes.

Michael made it to the quarterfinals, but unfortunately he didn’t get enough votes to advance to the next round. Not long after his AGT audition, Michael tested positive for COVID-19. He spent eight days in the ICU battling the virus, and is now recovered.

The comedian has since donated plasma, and is encouraging everyone to wear a mask. Recently, Michael posted a selfie with the doctor he says saved his life, saying he had a final checkup and is “all good.”
