Let’s see how this Battle played out on this week’s episode of The Comeback Stage.
I was honestly surprised when Crystal didn’t turn a chair during her Blind Audition. Though “Wicked Game” is overdone, she definitely did well with it and it didn’t feel like the same song we’ve heard over and over. The coaches blamed them not turning on her song choice. Can’t blame them!
This time around, Crystal is singing “At Last” by Etta James. It’s a big song to tackle! Similar to her Blind Audition song, I think she might’ve bitten off more than she can chew here. She for sure has the soulful tone and a great range. But again, it’s just a song that’s been done so many times. It’s hard to make it new again. Bebe comforts her when she gets scared and emotional about her upcoming performance. Then, when she has the chance to perform it, there’s a lot of room for her to do more with the song.
Kayla put her own spin on Britney Spears’ “…Baby One More Time” in her Blind Audition. She has an interesting tone but I don’t know that her arrangement of the song did her any favors. The coaches compared her to Gwen Stefani and Regina Spektor. Kelly even called her “cool” and John said she was “daring!”
For her Battle, Kayla decided to sing “What You Know” by Two Door Cinema Club. And right from the get-go, Bebe says she thinks Kayla has a chance to make it to the Live Shows! She also says that Kayla has to get out of her own head. When it came time for her to sing for her spot in the next round, Kayla delivered. Plus, it was fun hearing a new song that is never covered on talent shows. She is fresh and interesting!
And The Winner Is…
After their Battles performances, Bebe unsurprisingly chose…Kayla Seeber to move on! She seems to like the young singer a lot. And there’s definitely potential there! On the other hand, this seemed like a missed opportunity for Crystal in my opinion. She’s probably the better singer but let song choice knock her out of the competition.
But there’s still a long road ahead for Kayla. Next, she’ll go up against someone who gets eliminated in the Battle Rounds. There’s no new episode until the Battles start on the broadcast show in a few weeks. Join us then for the next recap of The Comeback Stage!
