If Carrie Underwood hadn’t auditioned for American Idol, would she be the huge star she is today? We’ll never know that for certain, but what we do know is that Carrie almost didn’t try out.
In a new interview with BBC Radio (via CMT), the Season 4 American Idol winner revealed that she tried to talk herself out of auditioning for the show. As it turns out, we have her mom to thank for pushing her to pursue her dreams.
Carrie Underwood’s Idol Uncertainty
“I always wanted to be a country music singer, and I had seen Idol,” Carrie recalled. “But I’m not that kind of person, to be honest. I don’t just go do stuff like that. That was dreaming too big. The stars just lined up in the right way.”
“And my mom was a big supporter when I was trying to talk myself out of it,” she continued, “like ‘It’s stupid. There’s no way. What are the chances?’” Her mom would apparently tell her, “I will drive you. Let’s go. Why not?”
Carrie Underwood Journals Of American Idol
“This has exceeded any and all hopes and dreams and expectations that I ever had,” Carrie told BBC Radio of her Idol success. “Some of it, thinking back, is kind of a blur because there was so much going on all at once.”
She added that she wrote in journals during that time, and is interested to read through them. We’re sure her fans would love to read some excerpts as well. Fingers crossed we’ll get so see it someday.
Carrie has kept in touch with her roots in the years since her win. She performed her song “Southbound” on the American Idol finale earlier this year, and posted a funny throwback photo on the anniversary of her win.
