Car Crash Survivor Makes Katy Perry Cry On ‘American Idol’ [VIDEO]
Katy Perry has been known to shed a few tears on American Idol, especially when romance is involved. In 2018, she got emotional watching David Francisco audition for the show, with his fiancée looking on fondly.
David shared his story of getting hit by a car and being paralyzed from the waist down. He went on to deliver an impressive performance that earned the judges’ praise. Check it out below.
David Francisco Auditions For ‘American Idol’
David explained that he moved to Nashville to pursue music in 2016, and three weeks later a distracted driver ran a red light and hit him with their car, paralyzing him from the waist down.
The 25-year-old said he cried for months after the accident. Eventually, however, he noticed his foot moving and says he had continued to improve until the day of his audition. He was able to walk into the audition room with crutches.
After his accident, David reconnected with his friend Kristi. Since then, the pair got engaged. Kristi attended David’s audition with him and watched as he performed “Isn’t She Lovely” by Stevie Wonder.
The performance brought Katy Perry to tears, as she grabbed tissues to wipe her face. “I’m just watching her and how in love she is,” Katy said. “I’m just losing it.” She added that Kristi was watching David “with the purest kind of love.”
How Far Did David Get On The Show?
David got a golden ticket to Hollywood from the American Idol judges. As he walked on stage for this second round of the competition, he threw his crutches away from himself. David went on to perform “Sunday Morning” by Maroon 5.
Unfortunately, David didn’t make it past Hollywood Week. However, a few months later, David and Kristi appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show after their wedding. The couple organized a charity bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles.
The singer also befriended Freya Markoswki, the woman who hit him with her car, having forgiven her immediately for the accident. “I figured she probably also was going through a lot,” David said. “I’d been shown so much support, I wanted to show her some support.”
David has continued to perform, opening for The Voice winner Chris Blue at three sold-out shows. Earlier this year, he released a memoir called Lionheart, along with an accompanying soundtrack of original music. You can follow David on Instagram for updates about his career.
