Bring the Funny…er…brought the funny in its premiere tonight. Host Amanda Seales and judges Jeff Foxworthy, Chrissy Teigen, and Keenan Thompson saw a variety of comedians all competing for $250,000 and a spot at the Just For Laughs Comedy Festival. How did they do? Let’s see!
Matt came out and pointed out the obvious: he’s very handsome. But he managed to build on the basic premise that he’s really ridiculously good looking into a pretty funny bit about what if he went to jail and fell in love. Funny. The judges thought so too.
Frangela is a pair of hilarious comediennes who put an energetic spin on the premise that Black people like to talk at the movies. I’m not going to comment on that but it was a solid sketch and the judges really loved it. So, did I.
I didn’t know they were going to do variety stuff like magic. Though I guess it’s comedy magic so it fits the format. Jarred is no Piff the Magic Dragon but he makes up for it with a lot of energy and some pretty great slight of hand.

This is our first musical act of the night. They remind me a lot of New Zealand musical legends Flight of the Conchords but they were montaged so I’m not sure if that is bad. Maybe it is, we shall see.
Ali told a pretty funny joke about how UPS and USPS are the different types of guys you date but the judges thought she needed to shape her act a little more.
They did not like this guy at all. I hate to say it but he’s like the guy at the open mic night that you forget as soon as you drive home from the comedy club.
OK, this act is either brilliant or really dumb. It was like an Ionesco scene. He came out with a violin, played a note, and then left. He was in the montage so maybe there was more. I kind of hope there wasn’t. It’s funnier that way.
OK, so the premise is that he’s a robot comedian from the future. He’s like a living Ken doll with plastic hair and suit. It was weird but I was here for it. He was telling lame, corny, tired jokes but like a robot would. Kenan worries that it would get old but Chrissy is all about it. Jeff thought the jokes were lame…which was the point. Maybe my sense of humor is just weird. Ok, that’s definitely true.
Now these guys were entering my arena: sketch comedy. The sketch was a children’s show in which the sound guy has to join in and he’s an insane conspiracy theorist. It was funny but it was one joke told over and over. Jokes need to build and tell a longer story than one joke. The judges loved it but I was underwhelmed.
Orlando stands out because of his frenetic, nervous energy. He’s either suffering from ADHD or he’s really good at faking it. He talked mostly about HGTV which is something that is ripe to make jokes about. Good job, Orlando.
But only 6 can move forward. 10 is way too many. More than an hour of comedy is cruel. The acts that are moving forward are:
