Blind Audition Had Kelly Clarkson In Tears, So Why Didn’t She Turn Around?
NBC In Season 14 of The Voice, Stephanie Skipper auditioned with a cover of Kelly Clarkson’s song “Piece by Piece.” It’s always a risk to sing a coach’s song, but in this case Stephanie’s rendition was powerful enough to make Kelly cry.
Despite her emotional reaction, however, Kelly didn’t turn her chair for a chance at having Stephanie on her team. See Kelly’s tearful response below, and read on to find out why she didn’t turn.
Kelly Clarkson Cries Hearing ‘Piece By Piece’
“Oh, no,” Kelly said as soon as she heard Stephanie start to sing her song, which she wrote comparing her absent father to her husband Brandon Blackstock. As Stephanie performed, Kelly could be seen wiping away tears, and seemed conflicted about whether to turn around.

“Just do it,” fellow coach Alicia Keys told Kelly. “Do it if you feel it.” However, Kelly stayed put, appearing disappointed that Stephanie wouldn’t make it on the show. That’s when Adam Levine hit his button, and Kelly thanked him for turning. Not long after that, Blake Shelton also turned around for Stephanie.
So why didn’t Kelly turn? She was filling up her team quickly and wanted different voices. “I’ve got a lot of people on my team, so I’m looking for something different,” Kelly explained later. “That’s the only reason I didn’t turn for Stephanie.”
What Did The Coaches Think Of Stephanie?
“I’m so sad. I know this is embarrassing, but I’m crying. I’m so mad I didn’t turn around,” Kelly told Stephanie after her audition. “The fact that you picked that song was cool. I’m so sorry. It’s my first season, so I’m filling my team pretty fast.”
Stephanie was understanding, telling Kelly, “You don’t have to apologize. I’m on the show, girl!” She ended up choosing to join Team Adam, which was reportedly her first choice anyway.

“One of my favorite things about you is that you brought my attention to the really important thing, which is the song and the story and what’s actually happening up there,” Adam said of Stephanie’s audition. “The heart and soul is there. That is the only place, at least on my team here, that I really want to start.”
Unfortunately, Stephanie didn’t make it past the Battle Rounds of Season 14.
