Escape artist Merlin Cadogan auditioned for season three of Britain’s Got Talent in what was quite a surprising act. He literally wore just a pair of underwear for his audition, leaving little to the imagination. Check out his unique performance below.
Merlin Cadogan Showed Off His Escape Skills On ‘BGT’
Merlin promised that his ‘BGT’ act would be “very dangerous.” He said that his ultimate dream is to be “the modern-day Harry Houdini.” For his act, Merlin put on a giant diving helmet. His assistant proceeded to fill it with water. She then took a chain and tied his body up with it. The goal was to get out of the chains and then juggle fire while underwater. First, Merlin tackled the chains, and while doing so, his assistant held up a curtain so that the audience could not see the process. This prompted Simon Cowell to give him his red buzzer. He proceeded to juggle a few torches that were on fire, all the while he was still underwater. Finally, he was able to drain all of the water out of the helmet and breathe. “I like you, Merlin, I like people who are just bordering on being complete loonies,” Piers Morgan said.
“I thought that was very impressive,” Amanda Holden said. “It just looked so stupid when you had that thing on your head and you were juggling you know I just couldn’t imagine that on the Royal Variety,” Simon said. He then asked what more Merlin could do to make the act more extreme. “I could die” Merlin replied. Though Simon initially buzzed the act, he and the other two judges ultimately voted “yes” sending Merlin into the semi-finals. For his next performance, he escaped from a straight jacket while hanging upside down on a burning rope. His idol Harry Houdini broke two ribs attempting the same stunt, though his rope was not on fire. Merlin successfully escaped but was not voted through to the next round.
Where Is He Now?
After appearing on ‘BGT,’ he actually set a Guinness World Record for the longest time to juggle three objects underwater on a single breath. He did this within a minute and 20 seconds. He also broke another Guinness World Record in 2010 for picking the most police handcuffs in one minute. Naturally, everyone wants to know where Merlin got his love for wanting to be an escape artist. “Well I surf as much as I can,” he told us exclusively. “I’ve surfed all over the world on some pretty big waves! That’s how I found out I could hold my breath for so long.” He definitely showed that he could hold his breath for quite a long time during his ‘BGT’ audition.
He is also always showing off his incredible strength on Instagram like in the video below.
