Everyone remembers season two of American Idol. Twenty-four million votes were cast in the finale, and Ruben Studdard came out on top over runner-up Clay Aiken. After, both Aiken and Studdard would go onto do big things in the industry. However, they recently came together for an incredible holiday performance on The View that you need to see!
Clay and Ruben’s performance of O Holy Night brings up their holiday Broadway show from last year. Ruben & Clay’s First Annual Christmas Carol Family Fun Pageant Spectacular Reunion Show, aka Ruben & Clay’s Christmas Show ran for a month last December at the Imperial Theatre.
When asked by Megan McCain if the show is coming back, they say their looking at taking it on tour! Um, yes please! We here at Talent Recap would love that!
Clay and Ruben both had stellar auditions for American Idol, with Ruben auditioning with “Ribbon in the Sky” by Stevie Wonder, and Clay with “Always and Forever” by Heatwave. They both made it through Hollywood Week, and to the semi-finals.
Clay was almost eliminated, but survived through the Wild-Card Round. Ruben was in the bottom two in the Top Five, but also made it through. Of course, the two performed original songs during the finale, Clay’s being “This is the Night,” and Ruben’s being “Flying Without Wings.” Amazingly, they debuted at #1 and #2 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Outside of Idol, Clay ran for Congress in North Carolina’s 2nd District, and even won the Democratic Primary, but he ultimately lost to incumbent Renee Ellmers. Ruben later appeared on The Biggest Loser, losing 119 pounds during his time with the program.
Regardless, we loved seeing these two perform together again, and would love to see them perform more! American Idol will return for season eighteen, the third season on ABC, on February 16th, 2020!
