Nepali powerhouse Arthur Gunn first wowed the entire world with his unique voice last season on American Idol. Fans were devastated when he was announced as the runner up losing to winner Just Sam. But, Arthur has already put out a new album and is urging his fans to check it out. It begs the question, do runner-ups of American Idol do better than the winners?
‘American Idol’ Runner Up Arthur Gunn Drops New Album
In a post on Instagram, Arthur, whose real name is Dibesh Pokharel, announced that his album called “Self-Titled” is out now. He wanted to thank “all musicians, the generation of G’s for making this happen.” He gave a special shoutout to Angelo Rodriguez for producing the seven-song album. “It was a grand time to record, write and co-produce the ‘Self-Titled.’ After days and nights of hard work, this came to life” he continued. “Huge shout to all the funky people in the world for support and love. Here we present ‘Self-Titled’ to you all.”
This comes after he posted a lengthy caption to clear up some rumors about his life after American Idol. “All of you who are wondering why I don’t have my music out there. First of all, With the rendition of the “Have You Ever Seen The Rain” by Creedence Clearwater Revival, I have requested to the authorized people to release it, don’t get mad at me if it doesn’t get released, I’ve not authorized person for that.” This is in reference to his American Idol single that was supposed to be released after he made it to the top five on the show. For some reason, all of the other four contestants had their singles released with the exception of Arthur. No explanation was ever given as to why this was the case.
“For those of you who are wondering if I received a bunch of money and record deals out of holding this ‘runner up’ title, I haven’t, nothing at all. I have got tons of requests for live shows, collaboration, and all, it would take half of my career to be responding to that and going out there and to be playing shows for you all” he went on to say. So while he did not receive a record deal after his time on American Idol, he did get offers to play shows. However, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, he explained that he cannot currently play live shows.
Arthur Spoke About The Pressure He Experienced After Competing On ‘Idol’
“I want to thank American Idol as a platform for giving me this recognition, all that it has brought me is your attention. I only know all the sleepless nights, pressure and whatnot, all of that I had to go through singing my lungs & heart out, but that’s history” he said. “If I was rich out of American Idol, I would have been driving Lamborghini with two wheels right now.” It definitely seems like there is a little bit of animosity towards the show that he has expressed on social media for not releasing his song. But, we can say with confidence that his huge fanbase will support him in anything that he does and his album, though not under a label will definitely do well. So when will the winner Just Sam drop her album?
Even though she has deleted pretty much all of the American Idol content from her Instagram account including her profile picture which is now blank, Sam still credits the show for giving her a start in the music industry. Soon after her win, she signed a deal with Hollywood Records/Industrial Media’s 19 Recordings. She has yet to release any music, probably due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Based On American Idol History, Arthur Didn’t Need To Win To Be Successful
We all know that there have been several past American Idol contestants that did not win the show that have still gone on to be super successful. Gabby Barret who came in third place on the show has had incredible success with her No.1 hit country song “I Hope” with Charlie Puth. No shade here, but she is definitely doing a little bit better than winner Maddie Poppe. And we all remember that this season of American Idol continuously talked about the runner up Alejandro Aranda who has acquired a huge following under the name of Scarypoolparty, making the winner Laine Hardey seem a lot less successful.
Not to mention other notable contestants to go on to have huge careers after falling short of the win include Adam Lambert, Katherine McPhee and Jennifer Hudson.
