‘American Idol’ Reject Breaks Down After Turning Four Chairs On ‘The Voice’ [VIDEO]

American Idol and The Voice may both be singing competitions, but that doesn’t mean they’re exactly the same. Often, singers may find success on one show and not the other.

Take, for example, Damien Lawson, who auditioned for The Voice in 2014. He had previously been rejected from American Idol, but ended up turning all four coaches’ chairs on The Voice.

Damien Lawson Auditions For ‘The Voice’

Damien auditioned for American Idol in 2007. The show rejected him, and he later posted a video of himself singing the song he performed at his audition. The video currently has over 96,000 views.

People in the comments remarked on what a great singer Damien is, and encouraged him to keep trying. Seven years later, he did just that, auditioning for The Voice Season 7 with a cover of Boyz II Men’s “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday.”

The response was almost immediate, as three of the coaches — Adam Levine, Gwen Stefani, and Pharrell Williams — turned their chairs after the first line of the song. It took Blake Shelton a little longer, but he eventually joined them. Adam was so impressed, he gave Damien a standing ovation.

Damien became emotional after he sang, prompting Gwen Stefani to hop on stage and hug him. He told the coaches, “I’ve just been told ‘No’ so many times, it just feels good to see you guys turn around for me.” Pharrell told him, “These moments happen in our lives as confirmation. When someone tells you ‘No’, it doesn’t mean you stop.”

How Far Did Damien Lawson Go On Season 7?

Damien chose to join Team Adam Levine for The Voice Season 7. He made it to the Top 5, where he was eliminated. However, he ended up coming back as a wild card thanks to the audience’s votes, and finished the competition in fourth place.

Damien is still singing. In 2018, he released a single called “Sorry,” and earlier this year he released a new song called “Next to Me.” You can also follow him on YouTube, where he posts covers.

As Damien posted on his website, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is a fan of his. The star posted that he watched Damien “kill it” on The Voice, complimenting his “incredible voice & range.”
