‘American Idol’ Reboot Takes On ‘The Voice’ Tonight
It’s a battle of the titans on Monday nights at 8pm EST this Spring. On the one hand you have The Voice, by far the most popular talent competition show on TV with new judge Kelly Clarkson and the king, Blake Shelton. On the other hand you have the OG talent show, American Idol, coming back on ABC. On Monday nights the two shows will go head-to-head. Which one will come out victorious?
I imagine that in the beginning, American Idol will definitely edge out The Voice simply because of the novelty factor. People are going to tune in the first few episodes to see how Idol is different now with new judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie. But I wonder if it can keep up the momentum it had coming into the premiere with the media blitz Disney and ABC mounted.
Then again, The Voice has been doing very well in the ratings due in no small part to Kelly Clarkson who is just plain fun to watch. One thing I know for sure is that fans of The Voice are very loyal and American Idol has an uphill battle ahead of it. Idol has to try and recapture old fans who have moved on from the show. Many of those fans had stopped watching in the last few seasons of the show. Idol has to try and recapture the magic of the first few seasons in a very different world.
Not that I see either show going anywhere soon. They’ll probably be neck-and-neck this season, one being up one week and the other the next. What we’ll have to see is whether America buys this new and much nicer version of Idol and if they prefer it over Blake Shelton’s winning Sexiest Man Alive smile.
