The ‘American Idol’ Judges Lack Dramatic Tension
One of the things that made the original American Idol so fun was the comedic/dramatic tension between Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul. The two were constantly bickering and they played up their created personas. Paula was the nice one that was a little ditzy and Simon was a straight up jerk. The word on the street is that one component that the American Idol reboot lacks is this tension.
Supposedly, Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie all get a long famously and don’t fight or disagree much at all. They tend to be on the same page about the artists so there is none of the back and forth you get with the original American Idol judges or Blake Shelton and Adam Levine on The Voice. This could be bad for the show. Without conflict there is no drama and without drama the show will be boring.
I get that the producers at ABC are risk adverse to having too much drama. After all, it’s not like when it was on Fox that LIVES for drama. Still you need some conflict or else it’s a show about nice people watching singers sing. Snoozefest city.
