American Idol is known for discovering some amazing singers, but there have been plenty of weird auditions over the years. For example, Ben Haar auditioned for Season 7 while dressed as Princess Leia. And that wasn’t even the weirdest part!

Ben ended up leaving his audition before he even started singing, and then returned later looking a little bit different. Check it out in the audition below, and read on to find out how the judges reacted.

‘American Idol’ Contestant Waxes His Chest Hair

Ben started his American Idol audition wearing a long black cloak that covered his entire body. Judge Simon Cowell seemed to write him off as soon as he walked in, rolling his eyes at the costume. Little did he know, it was even wackier underneath.

Ben said he wanted his actual costume to be a “surprise.” He then removed his cloak to reveal that he was wearing an outfit inspired by Princess Leia’s bikini in Star Wars. He had the paper with his audition number stuck to his bare belly.

Randy Jackson laughed, Paula Abdul looked stunned, and Simon was already fed up. “Why should I bother listening to this?” he asked. Ben replied, “‘Cause it might have been entertaining.”

Paula, meanwhile, had one thing in particular that bothered her. “I can’t get past the chest hair,” she said. Randy asked if he would get rid of it, and Ben was up for it. He suggested that he leave to have it waxed, and then come back.

What Did The Judges Think Of Ben’s Performance?

Ben left the American Idol audition room and returned later, once again wearing his cloak. He removed it to reveal that the hair on his chest and stomach had been removed. “I took it all off, just for you guys, because I didn’t want Paula to be distracted.”

Randy and Paula encouraged Ben to sing. He said he’d be performing “Don’t Cha” by the Pussycat Dolls. He only got a few lines into the song before Simon stopped him. “I’m not going along with this anymore,” he said. “I’m not interested. Out you go.”

Later, he called Ben a “fat lump” who “wants to be on TV.” In a video after his audition, Ben showed off a bag purportedly containing the chest hair that he had removed. Today later used him as an example in an article explaining how American Idol producers purposely plant ridiculous contestants in front of the judges.
