Both singers made it into the Top 5 last season, along with fellow couple Maddie Poppe and Caleb Lee Hutchinson. Earlier in the season, Ryan Seacrest seemed to reveal the pair’s relationship when he suggested that the girl Cade was singing about was in the lounge. The camera then cut to Gabby covering her face.
The couple remained coy about it for awhile, but were eventually open about their relationship. They even recorded a cover of Lady Antebellum’s “Need You Now” together last year and posted it on Cade’s YouTube channel.
So how did the big proposal happen? The couple told People that they realized on a recent trip to Los Angeles that they were staying in the same hotel where they first hung out during American Idol. Their friend was taking photos of them in the room where they met, and Cade seized the moment.
“She started taking the pictures and then she said, ‘Hold on I need to switch lenses.’ Cade start saying all these sweet things and I didn’t think anything of it because he normally does it all the time,” Gabby said. “But I noticed he kept going on and on and then he eventually said, ‘I want to spend the rest of my life with you.’ Then he got down on one knee and he asked and I said, ‘Yes!’”
Some people might say that it’s too soon for the pair to get married. After all, Gabby is only 19, and Cade is 22. They’ve also only been together for about a year. But the couple says they’re ready, and they don’t want to waste any more time.
“We do not date like most people do,” Cade told People. “We strive for a biblical relationship, so that requires a lot of strength in other areas. We are trying to be holy in our relationship. So we cannot physically do five years. We both know — we’ve talked about it and prayed about it.”
The couple says they want to get married in “colder weather,” and the judges (Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan) are definitely invited. “The judges are like family to us,” Gabby said. “Idol was the very beginning of our love story and we would love for all of our family to be there.”
Congrats to Gabby and Cade! We can’t wait to see if they’ll perform a duet at their wedding.
