American Idol Chooses Its Final 3

ABC/Eric McCandless

The final 5 are not the final 3 on American Idol. It was a memorable evening in which the gang performed Carrie Underwood songs under the tutelage of Carrie herself. Carrie is, of course, one of the most successful alums in American Idol history. So, who made it and who went home? Let’s see.

Michael J Woodard

Michael did not disappoint with his rendition of Flat on the Floor. Michael is consistently one of the best singers and performers in the competition. I was surprised then when he did not make it through to the final 3. I was really rooting for you, Mike.

Gabby Barrett

Mel and I have said for weeks now that we think Gabby is going to win. We caught a lot of flack for this but I believe we are right. She has the makings of the next Carrie Underwood and she made it through to the top 3.

Cade Foehner

Cade is so awesome and his rendition of Undo It Was, as always, fantastic. But, as I expected, Cade did not make it to the top 3. It’s not that he’s not good, it’s that American Idol has always looked for a particular kind of star and Cade isn’t it.

Caleb Lee Hutchinson

Caleb has been a fan favorite since the start and that is partly due to the country music fans that have tuned in to watch Luke Bryan. Caleb has an easy style that’s hard to ignore. Unsurprisingly, he made it into the top 3.

Maddie Poppe

Watch out, Gabby. Maddie is coming for you. I know we haven’t talked a lot about Maddie Poppe, but in the last few weeks she’s really come into her own and is Gabby’s biggest competition. Upset win? She got into the final 3.
