‘American Idol’ Auditions Continue With Some More Stellar Talent
The American Idol train rolled into Savannah, GA, New York City, LA, and Nashville, TN looking for the next great American Idol winner. They had some fantastic singers come on the show to do their thing. Besides some shade thrown Taylor Swift’s way by Katy Perry, it was an uplifting and entertaining episode.
She does a lot of karaoke, which is usually a pejorative on these shows…but holy crap, this girl can sing. I want to go to her karaoke bar. The one I go to the people are terrible. She sang Lay Me Down by Sam Smith and killed it. She of course got a golden ticket.
Kristyn is from my home state of Texas and she looks it. She’s like a legit cowgirl. Riding and roppin’ for real. She did I Wanna Be a Cowboy Sweetheart by Patsy Montana and has some serious yodel skills. Katy gave her a no but Luke and Lionel were a yes so she’s going to Hollywood.
Jonny is one tall drink of water and sang a soulful original called Blue Jeans about a girl he loves. Lionel thought Jonny’s vocals could use a couple more years of seasoning but Katy and Luke dug the guy’s style and gave him yeses.
Ricky did an original called LA is Lonely. He had a good voice but lost control a bit on the high notes. He had real passion in his voice though and the song was really solid. He got three yeses.
Young Effie hit the stage with her punk rock look and sang and original song while playing the piano and blew the judge’s preverbal wigs off. The got an enthusiastic three yeses.
Tyler “Cougar” Gordon
Tyler made a weird choice in singing Judas Priest. Not because it’s a metal song but because Rob from Judas Priest is hard to sing. Tyler THINKS he can hit those notes. He cannot. He got three nos.
Johnny has an excellent voice but he oversings a bit. Lionel takes the time to coach him and help him control his voice. He sang It’s a Man’s World by James Brown and All of Me by John Legend. He got three yeses.
Caleb Lee Hutchinson
We haven’t had many good country singers on American Idol this season, even though Luke Bryan is one of the judges. Caleb changed that. He sang If it Hadn’t Been for Love by The SteelDrivers and KILLED it. He got three yeses.
Shannon went for something bold and sang When We Were Young by Adele. Now, if you are going to take on Adele you had better BRING it. And Shannon definitely did. She easily got three yeses.
Amelia Hammer Harris
Amelia comes from a musical family with her estranged father being a famous songwriter. She sang Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones, which is an unexpected choice. Mick Jagger would have been proud. She got three yeses.
Ryan Zamo made the mistake of coming on the show and singing Katy Perry’s favorite song, Gravity by Sara Bareilles…but he can’t sing. Three nos.
Milo & Julian Spasato
This duo of twins…I guess all twins are duos…this SINGING duo brought it with their rendition of Bruno Mars’ Runaway Baby. They also brought their dad to play guitar. They also played sax and trumpet. What? They are going to Hollywood.
Les has one speed, full throttle, which could prove to be a problem in the future. He did A Change is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke. He got three yeses but was told to be careful with overdoing it.
OK, this one made me cry. Maddie works with children with disabilities and she brought along her friend Marcus who has Downs Syndrome. He joins the audition and sits next to Katy. Maddie sung New Rules by Dua Lipa and annihilated it. Then she and Marcus sang Katy’s song Firework. C’mon. She easily got three yeses.
