We finally found out which act earned Julianne Hough’s Golden Buzzer on AGT this week, and it might not have been what you expected. Considering Julianne’s dance background, it would make sense for her to choose a dancer to send to the live shows. Instead, she chose 12-year-old singer Luke Islam.
Luke shared his dream of becoming a Broadway star, and performed a powerhouse rendition of “She Used to Be Mine” from the musical Waitress. After his audition, Julianne told Luke that she believes he will “become a star.”
Why Julianne Hough Chose A Singer As Her Golden Buzzer
So why did Julianne choose a singer for her Golden Buzzer instead of a dancer? She explains the decision in a new video from AGT which was recorded right after she hit the buzzer.
I’m sure a lot of you guys were thinking I’m gonna pick a dancer…Julian Hough explains her Golden Buzzer pick
“I’m sure a lot of you guys were thinking I’m gonna pick a dancer,” Julianne acknowledged. “But Luke absolutely crushed it.” She said that he “lit up the entire room,” and praised his “articulate” way of explaining his dream.
And when he sang, Julianne said Luke “absolutely blew my mind.” She added, “The minute he opened his mouth, it was like we were witnessing a young star literally being born.” Julianne was also impressed that he knew exactly what he wanted, and said she can totally see him on Broadway.
Julianne Hough Wants You To Support Luke Islam
Julianne called Luke a “true artist” for his ability to “connect” with his audience. “Please support him throughout this competition,” she told viewers. “I really believe in him, and I hope that you do, too.”
At the end of AGT‘s video, Luke shared his own reaction to the Golden Buzzer, thanking Julianne for pressing it. “You have been an idol of mine for so long,” he told her.
Luke already has the support of some pretty cool people besides Julianne — Sara Bareilles and the cast of Waitress on Broadway. The cast was even group texting about it on the night of the show.
Julianne Challenges Terry Crews & Gabrielle Union To Dance
Speaking of Julianne’s dancing skills, she recently challenged her fellow AGT cast member to “Dance or Donate” challenge. In the post she write: “I am dancing today as a part of the @danceordonate challenge to support the @UnitedCancerFront! Thank you @lillytartikoff for the nomination and for the work you have set in motion to help find a cure for cancer using targeted therapy. 🙏🏼 I now challenge @derekhough, @gabunion, @terrycrews, and @nina to Dance or Donate for the #UnitedCancerFront. ❤️
