9 Years Later Friday Singer Rebecca Black Gets Emotional About Her Journey

Remember Rebecca Black from the “Friday” music video? Can you believe it’s been nine years since that song went viral? Rebecca Black herself posted about the anniversary on Monday.
The 22-year-old got real about the response to the song and what her journey has been over the years. That included sharing that she’s been depressed and dealt with negative body image.
Rebecca Black Remembers ‘Friday’
Rebecca was 13 when she put out the music video for “Friday.” She described herself as “terribly ashamed of herself and afraid of the world” at that age, and wishes she could go back and talk to herself.
WHY DOES ‘AGT’ TEEN STAR ANGELINA JORDAN PERFORM BAREFOOT?
At 15, Rebecca says she “felt like she had nobody to talk to about the depression she faced.” At 17, her classmates would throw food at her and her friends. At 19, music producers and songwriters refused to work with her. Even now, Rebecca says she sometimes feels “disgusting” when she looks in the mirror.
Rebecca reminded followers (and herself) that “every day is a new opportunity to shift your reality and lift your spirit.” She also emphasized that “you are not defined by any one choice or thing.”
The post, which was accompanied by a selfie featuring Rebecca’s cute puppy Marlowe, has received 35,000 retweets and more than 300,000 likes on Twitter. Rebecca clearly has a lot of support, and her message resonated with people.
Where Has Rebecca Been Since ‘Friday’?
Although she received a lot of negative feedback for her “Friday” music video, Rebecca won the 2011 Teen Choice Award for Choice Web Star. She has regularly pursued music in the years since, releasing several singles and an EP in 2017.
‘THE FOUR’S REBECCA BLACK SHARES HER EXPERIENCE WITH CYBERBULLYING
In 2018, Rebecca took her talents to the reality show The Four: Battle for Stardom. She broke down in tears, saying it “meant so much” to get to share her voice on the show after such negativity. Although she was eliminated, it was clearly a powerful experience.
This year, Rebecca has released three new singles — “Anyway,” “Do You?”, and “Sweetheart.” If all you know her for is singing about the weekend, we highly recommend you give her more recent music a listen.
