Perhaps no two winners in the history of American Idol (or talent shows in general) have been pitted against each other as much as Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. Both women have turned their appearances on the show into successful and long-lasting music careers, so obviously they must be in competition, right?

Wrong. In fact, Kelly and Carrie have a history of supporting each other, and actively arguing against the tendency to compare them. Like recent Voice winners Brynn Cartelli and Chevel Shepherd, they’re an amazing example of how talent show winners (or contestants) should treat each other.

1. Kelly Covers Carrie’s Song

We’re still waiting for the two winners to perform a duet together, but until then, we’ll settle for this video of Kelly singing “I Know You Won’t.” The song is from Carrie’s second album, released in 2007. “I don’t want to mess this up. I like this song,” Kelly said before performing it at a show in Los Angeles in 2011. As is to be expected, she knocked it out of the park.

Although some of Kelly’s fans commented that her version was better, one comment praised both women for their unique talents: “Carrie, a Full Lyric Soprano, balanced this song with power and sustenance. Kelly, another Full Lyric Soprano, balanced it with power and range. Both versions just blow you away. “

2. Kelly And Carrie Shut Down A Poll

In April of last year, a website called The Tylt asked its followers to vote for who is the “most iconic” Idol winner — Kelly or Carrie. When Kelly got wind of it, she tweeted, “I think we’re both winning in life and pretty blessed,” going on to say that they’re both singers, mothers, and CEOs.

Carrie then retweeted her, joking, “Whatever, girl, I voted for you!” She added that she wishes the media would “celebrate women’s success without pitting them against each other.”

3. Carrie Sends Kelly Her Apparel

Last June, Kelly posted a Twitter video in which she opened a package from Carrie’s fitness apparel line CALIA. She congratulated Carrie on the company turning three, saying she loves it and praising the creative cake-style packaging.

“I’ve lost weight since you sent this,” Kelly laughed. “So it’s all too big for me, which made me feel really thin.” She added that she loves the socks and fanny pack from Carrie’s line.

4. Kelly And Carrie Pose Together

At last summer’s Radio Disney Music Awards, the pair made a rare appearance together in red carpet photos, exciting fans. Kelly talked to Entertainment Tonight at the event about the rumored feud between the two women.

“Everybody always tries to pit me and Carrie against each other,” Kelly explained. “So, when I saw her I was like, ‘You know what? Let’s just end this right now and get a picture together because we are never in the same place.'” In response to the idea that they’re “enemies,” she added, “We don’t even know each other well enough to be enemies.”

5. Kelly Praises Carrie For Revealing Her Miscarriages

Last September, Carrie revealed that she had suffered three miscarriages in two years. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight at the iHeartRadio Music Festival, Kelly tearfully praised Carrie for sharing her experience.

“I’m so happy for her,” Kelly said of Carrie’s pregnancy. (She gave birth to her second son earlier this year.) She said she sent Carrie an email saying that “it’s so important that you talk about it” because “it makes women that feel inferior or feel like something’s wrong with them, it makes them feel comfortable that people go through it.”
