5 Facts About ‘The Voice’ Star Mike Jerel
Mike Was Invited To Audition For ‘The Voice’
Mike said in an interview that he was “contacted through Instagram” about auditioning for The Voice. He frequently posts videos of his performances, so it’s no surprise that the show apparently thought he was a good fit.
However, Mike said he was “hesitant” to audition, as he had already tried out for the show twice before. “This would be my third attempt at The Voice, and I figured I should give it another shot!” he said. “I’ve heard that the third time is a charm… I’m so glad I decided to trust my gut.”
He Started A Foundation For Late Grandmother
According to Mike’s Voice bio, his grandmother helped his mother raise him and his brother. His love of music started when his grandma bought him a drum set as a kid. She was an educator and musician, and would take him along when she performed at nursing homes.
Mike’s grandmother sadly passed away of cancer in 2014, but he’s since started the iWillDo Foundation in her honor, and volunteers at retirement communities in his hometown in Georgia. In a recent interview, Mike called his grandmother “an amazing soul.”
Mike Plays Multiple Instruments
The singer’s love of music started with the drums, but he also plays other instruments. He played the keyboard in his blind audition for The Voice, and in the above cover of “Time After Time” by Cyndi Lauper, he even plays the trumpet! How cool would it be if he played it on The Voice?
He Performs On A Cruise Ship
Mike’s job as a cruise ship entertainer was one of the reasons he wasn’t sure if he should audition for The Voice again, but we’re glad he took the chance. The 31-year-old studied music education at Columbus State University and has also worked as a middle school chorus teacher, as well as giving private vocal lessons.
