5 Facts About ‘AGT’ Star Shevon Nieto
1. Shevon is a two-time Olympic runner.
Shevon has competed in two Olympic games as a runner for Jamaica. In 2004, she competed in Athens, and in Beijing in 2008. She realized she was a fast runner back in high school, when she joined the track team and ran 400-meter hurdles. Shevon stopped her running career in 2016 after her now-husband Jamie was in an accident.
2. Her husband Jamie Nieto is also an Olympian.
Jamie Nieto was a high jumper who competed in the 2004 Athens Olympics, as well as the 2012 games in London. In 2016, while coaching Olympic hopefuls, Jamie’s foot slipped on a jump and he was injured. The accident left him paralyzed.
“I was getting ready for my 3rd Olympic Games and I dropped everything to be by Jamie’s side,” Shevon said on her website. “I was told that Jamie would not walk again and that we would have a long difficult road ahead.”
Shevon and Jamie had been dating for three years at this point. They ended up getting married, and Jamie was able to walk down the aisle holding his wife’s hand.
3. Shevon is a songwriter.
After Jamie’s accident, Shevon started writing songs and singing them to her husband, saying “it helped us get through.” She performed one of the songs, “Through the Good and the Bad,” in her America’s Got Talent audition.
Last year, Shevon released a music video for the song, which features her and Jamie smiling and dancing together. The song is available for purchase on Shevon’s website, with donations going toward Jamie’s recovery.
4. She started a foundation for people with disabilities.
In 2017, Shevon started the Helping Others Triumph Foundation, which is associated with the company Hotletics. A percentage of the company’s proceeds go to the foundation, which was created to support people with disabilities. The foundation also works with the Abilities Recovery Center, which helps people who have been paralyzed.
5. She’s been on TV before.
America’s Got Talent isn’t Shevon’s first time on television. Recently, she appeared on the Bounce TV sitcom In the Cut. She played a character named Shavonne. Based on photos she shared on social media, it looks like a pretty funny role. Will she be showing her sillier side on AGT this season? We’ll have to wait and see.
