5 Facts About ‘The Voice’ Breakout Singer Jim Ranger
He Is A Church Pastor And Worship Leader
Jim currently works as a campus pastor and worship leader at his father’s church, New Life Church, in Bakersfield, California. While he has gushed about how much he loves his job, he did open up on The Voice about how he misses secular music. He hoped that auditioning for The Voice would reawaken his love for music and expand his musical horizons.
As a child, Jim’s family traveled around in an RV preaching and singing at churches all over America. This sparked his love for music and led to him joining the school choir once his family settled down. All the while, he has kept his faith close to his heart and it still remains very important to him.
Jim Ranger Previously Competed On ‘American Idol’
Jim previously auditioned for season nine of American Idol. After a string of bad performances, the judges were hoping that Jim’s audition would bring them out of a rut. Jim sported a different look back then with long hair. He sang an original song called “Drive” about his wife. Simon said that Jim’s voice was “authentic.” He recieved three “yes’s” from judges Randy Jackson, Simon Cowell, and Kara DioGuardi.
However, guest judge Avril Lavigne said “no” and was concerned that Jim would not be able to handle being on the road away from his three children if he was a pop star. Jim was eliminated in the next round of the competition.
He Is A Big Family Man And They Are His Biggest Supporters
Jim has known his wife Camila since the two were in diapers. At the age of 20, the pair were married. The happy couple just celebrated 18 years of marriage back in June. “You are graceful, smart, strong, courageous… and so dang beautiful that I can’t help but be inappropriate,” Jim wrote on Instagram. “I am so madly in love with you Mrs. Ranger. Poems, songs, movies and art will never be able to convince me more than you do on a daily basis that soulmates are real. I’m honored to be yours!”
They now have three children together, Caden, Laila and Deagan. They have been supporting Jim every step of the way and have been since his audition on American Idol back in the day.
‘The Voice’ Fans Are Comparing Him To Season 18 Winner Todd Tilghman
Immediately after Jim’s Blind Audition aired on television, comments began flooding YouTube about his story resembling that of season 18 winner Todd Tilghman. Todd is a Mississippi pastor who also happened to be on Blake’s team when he won the show. “He’s giving me Todd Tilghman Vibes tbh” one person wrote on YouTube. “Alright Todd Tilghman 2.0 had arrived he’s already won see y’all next season” another person wrote.
“Jim, your voice has more soul and grit to it. It made sense that you were a campus pastor and worship leader, and, of course, Blake has won with a pastor quite recently,” John Legend said during the Battles. Todd currently has some future tour dates and a book in the works. Could Jim soon follow his path and win season 19 of The Voice?
Gwen Stefani Said Jim Is The One To Beat This Season
During the Knockouts, Jim performed Tim McGraw’s “Humble and Kind.” Gwen Stefani was so moved by the performance that she said Jim was the one to beat on this season of The Voice. For her, he delivered a winning performance.
“To have that experience and then knowing at the end of that round, you know, this is a whole different stage,” Jim said after the big performance. “To be going that far and to have that feedback and to have Gwen Stefani say she’s a fan of mine. It’s all very overwhelming.”
