16-year-old climber Luce Douady has been reported as dead after falling 500ft from a cliff in Southern France. The young athlete was set to compete in next year’s Olympics in Tokyo.

French climber, Luce Douady has died after she fell 500ft from a cliff. The 16-year-old professional climber was set to compete in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics before her tragic death.
It has been reported that Douady fell after walking with her friends along an exposed path in the Alps. Investigations are now taking place with speculations arising that the climber had not secured herself properly. Luce was apparently used to the area and such incidents were rare on the path the group took.
French media have stated that the group were walking through the region of Crolles and Saint-Pancrasse.

“At only 16, the future was before her. This terrible news hit her training comrades, her coaches and her club, Chambéry Escalade hard. But today, the whole federation is in mourning. We obviously think of her family and we will be at their disposal,” said the French Mountain Climbing Federation in a statement, responding to Douady’s death. “Luce Douady was in love with all facets of climbing, capable of major achievements in natural sites.”
Luce’s achievements are now more widespread than ever, with the young athelete’s achievements being shared amongst millions. Douady won the World Junior Bouldering Championships in 2019 as well as coming fifth in the International Federation of Sport Climbing Boulder World Cup for women’s bouldering.
Several climbing related federations and committees have sent their wishes to Luce’s family, sharing touching messages after the 16 year old’s death, including the IFSC.
