The BGT judges didn’t seem sure of what to expect from 12-year-old Maia Gough when she told them she would be singing a Whitney Houston song. But she proceeded to blow them away.
Whitney is not an easy artist to cover, but Maia knocked it out of the park. Check out Maia’s spectacular audition in the video below, and read on to find out what the judges had to say about her performance.
Maia Gough Auditions For ‘BGT’ With A Whitney Houston Song
Maia told the BGT judges that she was from South Wales, and that many of her family members were there to support her. She shared that Whitney Houston is her biggest idol, and she’d be covering one of her songs.
Simon Cowell and Alesha Dixon looked a bit skeptical, but they were soon proven wrong when Maia sang “I Have Nothing.” The BGT crowd went wild for her powerhouse performance.
All of the judges gave Maia a standing ovation. “To get to those notes the way you did was so impressive,” Alesha told her, calling it a “fantastic audition.” Amanda Holden said she was worried Maia would try to copy Whitney, but she ended up loving it. “It was mind-blowingly fantastic,” she said.
How Far Did Maia Get In The Competition?
David Walliams said Maia was “miles better than the adults” who perform on Britain’s Got Talent. Simon Cowell, meanwhile, said she was “the one I’m gonna remember today.” He called her “someone to watch.”
Maia received four “yes” votes from the judges to move on. She made it to the 2015 BGT semifinals, where she performed another Whitney song, “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength.” What made the performance even more impressive is that she recently had tonsillitis.
Unfortunately, Maia was eliminated in the semifinals round. But she hasn’t stopped singing. She’s posted a number of covers on her YouTube channel, most recently a rendition of “No Time to Die” by Billie Eilish. According to her Instagram, she’s attending the Urdang Academy for performing arts in London.
