This week marks the 17th anniversary of Kelly Clarkson’s American Idol win. Can you believe it’s been that long? Kelly was the first-ever winner of the show, and she went on to have arguably the most successful career of any talent show winner in history.
Kelly’s win was so iconic that the American Idol judges use her as a comparison when judging new singers to this day. In honor of this milestone, and how far Kelly has come in the years since, let’s look back at some of the best moments in her career and personal life. We can’t wait to see what she does next.
Kelly Clarkson Wins ‘American Idol’
Obviously we have to start with Kelly’s winning moment on American Idol. She was just 20 years old at the time, and performed her winner’s song “A Moment Like This.” Kelly was emotional throughout the performance, and at the end, her fellow contestants helped her finish the song in a sweet moment.
Kelly Stars In ‘From Justin To Kelly’
So maybe this 2003 movie, co-starring American Idol runner-up Justin Guarini, didn’t get great reviews. And maybe it flopped at the box office. But we can’t help but smile when we think back on it. It’s cheesy 2000s style at its best. Call it a guilty pleasure.
Kelly Clarkson Releases ‘Breakaway’
Kelly’s debut album Thankful included tracks like “Miss Independent” and “The Trouble With Love Is,” but it was her sophomore album Breakaway that really made a statement. Kelly broke ties with her manager Simon Fuller before the album’s release, and went for a punkier style. The album featured “Since U Been Gone,” “Breakaway,” and “Because of You.”
Kelly Performs ‘Since U Been Gone’ At The VMAs
Kelly’s performance at the 2005 MTV Video Music Awards became an instant classic. She belted out the lyrics while moving through the crowd, and ended the performance with a rain shower. How many other artists are willing to get soaked with water during a live performance?
Kelly Clarkson And Reba McEntire Collaborate
In 2007, Kelly recorded a duet of her song “Because of You” with country star Reba McEntire. They later starred together in an emotional music video for the song. The collaboration may have been prophetic, since Kelly is now married to Reba’s former stepson Brandon Blackstock.
Kelly Releases ‘Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)”
If you don’t feel inspired after listening to this song, we don’t know what to tell you. Kelly released it in 2011 on her album Stronger, and it’s since become an anthem for getting through life’s challenges. Young violinist and cancer survivor Tyler Butler-Figueroa even performed it in his audition for AGT this season.
Kelly Clarkson Wins ‘The Voice’
Last year, Kelly joined The Voice as a coach. She won her first season with contestant Brynn Cartelli, and then again the next season with Chevel Shepherd. Even though she lost the last season to John Legend (who also won on his first season), she’s still an amazing addition to the show.
Kelly Announces She’s Pregnant To The Whole World
Clarkson gave birth to her daughter River Rose in 2014, since then she has also given birth to a boy named Remington Alexander. She announced she was pregnant with her second child while performing in a concert and got emotional while singing “Piece by Piece,” after talking about what a great dad her husband is. The crowd went wild when she made the announcement.
She Releases ‘Meaning Of Life’
Kelly once again showed off what an incredible voice she has on her most recent album, Meaning of Life. It included the songs “Love So Soft,” “Whole Lotta Woman,” and “I Don’t Think About You.” Earlier this year, she went on tour, and included several special guests at her shows.
Kelly Clarkson Announces Her Talk Show
Clarkson shared last year that she would be hosting her very own talk show on NBC called The Kelly Clarkson Show. We love Kelly’s personality on social media and on The Voice, so it’s only natural that she would be a great host. The show premieres next week, with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as her first guest.
